We can say that the Alanian fortress this year had a good rest from visits: they decreased due to the coronavirus by 54%. For 10 months of 2020, only 69 thousand people visited it. For comparison: over the same period last year, the number of visitors almost reached 210 thousand.

The main attraction of Alanya is the medieval citadel of Alanya Kalesi

The fortress has interesting architecture and logistics, thick walls and incredible views from its battlements!

What's in the fortress? In the functioning citadel (built in the 13th century, the work lasted for 12 years), there were 160 towers, mainly guard towers, because it was built to protect against enemies. Once the whole city - the distant ancestor of Alanya - was located inside the fortress, on the territory of 10 hectares: it consisted of residential and market quarters, barracks, storage facilities. In addition, the city-fortress had its own mint, there was a mosque, there was a winter palace of Sultan Aladdin (Ala ad-Din) Keykubat (we already talked about it using the #keykubat tag).

Recall that in 2000 the fortress was included in the preliminary list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and after almost 20 years, the Alanya Kalesi citadel, which is visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists every month, is again under consideration. Until the summer of 2019 (as much as 30 years!), Careful excavations and research were carried out at the fortress, which scientists needed to confirm its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The citadel was home to the Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks, Ottomans, each of the civilizations left its mark on the fortress of Alanya, and now these traces can still be preserved.

Prof. Dr. Osman Eravşar, the leader of the 30-year excavation at the fortress, was thrilled by the findings:

"If you visited Turkey and did not see this castle, you have lost a lot! I insist that you come back, come to Alanya and see its fortress! I believe that Alanya Kalesi should be in the top ten treasures of the UNESCO list!"
